With proper safety precautions many injuries to children can be prevented. Despite this a recent study by Reuters suggests that there has been a “spike in deaths and serious injuries among U.S. children and teens in recent years”. Many of these traumatic injuries and wrongful deaths have resulted from preventable personal injury accidents as well as from intentional acts of violence. The article goes on to cite “murder, car crashes, suicide and addiction” as some of the primary reasons that more children in the country are suffering grave injury that may result in death.

Between the years 2013 and 2016, the death rate for children between the ages of 10 and 19 increased by 12%. Up until that time, the rate of child injury deaths from personal injury accidents had been on the decline. Injuries now account for about 70% of all deaths among children aged 10 to 19, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which conducted the study. This injury death rate is “far outpacing fatalities from natural causes like cancer and heart disease.” The rate of death in 2016—the last year analyzed for the study—was approximately 33 child deaths out of 100,000, which also showed a substantial increase from 2013 when the rate was approximately 30 deaths per 100,000.
The rate of unintentional injury deaths and personal injury accidents increased by 13% between 2013 and 2016. By far the most common unintentional injury deaths resulted from motor vehicle crashes, accidental poisoning, and drowning.
